While there are several different roofing products on the market currently, the asphalt shingle remains the most widely selected roofing material in the United States. In fact, it is estimated that an astonishing four out of five homes in America utilize some type of asphalt shingle. Homeowners who are ready for a roof replacement should discuss all of their viable roofing product options with their local Charlotte roofing professional in order to make the best decision for their home and their budget.

Asphalt shingles are a cost-effective product and widely available; these are just two of the reasons they are so popular. There are two different varieties of asphalt shingles: fiberglass and organic. Fiberglass shingles consist of woven fiberglass as their base and are then covered with an asphalt coating that is waterproof. They are coated on top with ceramic granules that protect the shingle from the sun's harmful UV rays. With the way asphalt fiberglass shingles are constructed, they don't require as much asphalt as organic shingles require in order to have enough strength and durability. Fiberglass shingles are lightweight and thin as a result. They also have a better fire rating and generally will come with a longer warranty period. Although they were not created until the 1980s, fiberglass shingles are the go-to roofing material for both homeowners and contractors today.

Organic shingles are made from recycled felt paper that has been coated in asphalt to make them waterproof. They are then coated with an asphalt adhesive in order to embed the ceramic granules. These shingles require 40 percent more asphalt than fiberglass shingles and are thicker, heavier, and more expensive as a result. They are not as eco-friendly and can warp over time though they are considered to be more flexible and rugged than the fiberglass shingle.

Both organic and fiberglass shingles can be manufactured in two different types: three-tab and architectural. Three-tab shingles are the least expensive and appear like three different pieces when they are installed even though they are only one piece each. Architectural shingles have an additional layer of asphalt giving them a contoured and dimensional name. They are, however, not ideal for roofs that have low slopes, which can be more susceptible to rain that is wind-driven.

Asphalt shingles generally last about 20 to 30 years, depending on which type it is and the structure of the roof. Homeowners should talk to their roofing professional about any available warranties on the product and the workmanship.
